The 2024 Word Awards Winners
Honouring the Best of Canadian Christian Writing from 2023

MARKHAM, ON – The Word Guild was pleased to host our 36th annual awards event on Saturday, Sept. 21. The event, which
took place online, recognized unpublished work as well as work published in 2023 for both Christian and general market
audiences. Entrants from across Canada received awards in over 40 genres and categories.
Winners were announced for several specialty awards. Aimee Patterson of Winnipeg, MB, won the Debra Fieguth Social
Justice Award for her book, Suffering Well and Suffering With. The Writer of Colour award went to Angela Charles of
Burlington, ON, for her novel, His Perfect Timing. Julie Fitz-Gerald of Uxbridge, ON, won the Harvey/Mackey Journalism
Award for her piece, “RBC Training Ground to Host Dedicated Testing Events for Indigenous Athletes.” The Castle Quay Best
New Canadian Manuscript award went to Susanne Dobbin of Brantford, ON, for her story, Raising the Dead.
“It's exciting to see the quality of writing produced by Canadian Writers who are Christian,” said Les Lindquist, Treasurer at
The Word Guild. “I'm delighted to see The Word Guild help these writers reach their audiences.”
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Best Book awards. Carolyn J. Watts of Vancouver, BC, won the Best
Non-Fiction Book award for her work, Risking Rest. The award for Best Fiction Book went to Laura Thomas of Kelowna, BC,
for her novella, Snow Globe Secrets.
The Word Awards provide invaluable recognition and encouragement for both emerging and established writers. "From
personal experience l can testify that winning a Word Award was an enormous boost to my confidence, and a validation of
my skill as a writer,” said David Kitz, Chair of the Board of The Word Guild. “It changed the trajectory of my entire life."
The Word Awards celebrate the achievements of writers at all stages of their careers. Newcomers submitted their works for
the Fresh Ink, In the Beginning, and the Castle Quay Best New Canadian Manuscript awards. “[W]e know that the Canadian
publishing industry has a very strong future,” Larry Willard, of Castle Quay Books, said during the celebration. “We look
forward to running this contest again next year, so I hope you’ll start to work on your manuscripts right away.”
